It was Bret Hart, not The Ultimate Warrior or Lex Luger, who proved to be the post-Hogan tonic wrestling fans sorely needed. The 'Hitman' worked world class matches, and he delighted kiddies worldwide by gifting pairs of his pink shades around ringside. The WWF's babyface future looked set in stone for the entire decade of the 90s.

Or not.

By 1996, people had evolved to cheering for anti-heroes like Steve Austin. Then, in '97, D-Generation X rallied support with sophomoric antics and rebellious behaviour. This was believably dispiriting for Bret. He'd worked hard to become a role model everyone could like, but scattered boos began appearing in his matches and segments.

Combine that with storyline stuff like Hart being screwed out of titles (before Montreal), Royal Rumble wins and more. Something had to give. Things escalated to the point that Hart cut scathing promos on an audience he felt had been corrupted by a changing landscape, and he was bang on the money.
