For those of you who missed the recent article looking at the most severe blade jobs in WWE history, you'll know Vince hasn't been shy of unloading the crimson river over the years. The First Blood match- a match type designed to play on exactly that- ends only when one wrestler bleeds (read: blades) before the other. In spite of its well-known status, only 9 First Blood matches have ever occurred in WWE history, 6 of the 9 during the Attitude Era. Stone Cold Steve Austin was a frequent participant in these matches, including the first one at the supernova that was the 1998 King of the Ring- more on that in a second. The dangers of the First Blood match come hand-in-hand with the dangers of blading itself, that being infections and potential fainting and oxygen deprivation to the brain due to excessive blood loss. It's interesting that not a single First Blood match featured on that linked list of the worst blade jobs in wrestling history, the majority instead appearing in your regular hardcore or Street Fight encounters. If there's one thing we can take from this, it's that the blade job being the actual finish of the match, meaning wrestlers must think about it in advance, proves that unsafe blade jobs come from the heat of the moment, more than anything else.
