10 WWE Matches That Changed EVERYTHING
2. Hulk Hogan Vs Andre The Giant (WrestleMania III)
Two colossi of a particularly successful period of the business met in the main event of the year’s biggest show with a few points to prove. Professional wrestling had the potential to reach audiences bigger than anyone imagined. The WrestleMania banner was a force to be reckoned with, and you can put on one of the most important matches of all time while pretty much stinking up the ring.
A bout featuring a past-his-prime Andre was never going to be a technical masterpiece, and the ‘Mania III headliner was slated at the time for its ponderous ring work (including a -**** rating from Dave Meltzer). But that’s hardly the point.
This was a modern-day biblical ethic, with the heroic Hogan taking on this gigantic villain, and against all the odds lifting him from his feet and slamming him down to earth for the win.
WrestleMania III broke attendance records (in kayfabe, at any rate) and propelled McMahon’s company to dizzying heights. This was the start of a gilded age of professional wrestling, the likes of which had never been seen before, and Hogan was its avatar.
