Wrestling storylines can sometimes be so horribly obnoxious, distasteful, or plainly awful that it makes returning to the product almost untenable, but the power of a real life horror will always outweigh any crime emerging from a scriptwriter's pen.

The immediate aftermath of the 2007 Chris Benoit double murder/suicide was handled about as well as could have been expected by WWE at the time, but the ugly wound it further exposed about the business as a whole offered a case for pause in the hearts and heads of many longstanding fans.

There were numerous contributing factors of course, but a robust and at times obsessive dedication to a hard-wearing industry had aided the severe denigration of his physical and mental health, and forced a previously unfathomable glance at the bigger picture for the first time in a generation.

Fostering Benoit's drug problems as well his competitive fire in place of significant help and healthcare support, WWE were arguably guilty of failing all their talents, despite no others thankfully committing such atrocities. Ahead of rampant changes that still continue today though, a large portion of the audience took to introspection, questioning if their personal enjoyment of the rigors had in any way fuelled a devastating fire.
