When news of the deaths of WWE superstar Chris Benoit, his wife Nancy and son Daniel broke, it completely shocked the wrestling world. How could it not? The three of them had been found dead in their family home and, while details were sketchy, speculation was rife. Most speculated (maybe even hoped) that it was caused by some sort of carbon monoxide poisoning or something like that. How could all three of them be dead? Wasn't Chris Benoit booked for the PPV last night? It was a disorienting, confusing time and WWE had a three-hour episode of Raw to produce... They were in a tough spot, with full details of what happened not yet available. The decision was made to make the show to be a tribute show to the former World Heavyweight Champion, with wrestler testimonials and clips of Benoit's most famous matches. As the show was in progress, however, the shocking details of what had really happened began to emerge. I remember watching the show live whilst simultaneously surfing the net in order to see something - anything - about what had happened in that house. Watching the culmination of that show as the news of a double murder suicide came out is the most uncomfortable experience I've ever had watching WWE TV. No, WWE didn't script this and they were in an impossible situation. But they had just eulogised a child murderer and soon the world would know exactly what Chris Benoit did.
