Putting a MITB briefcase on the line is not unprecedented in WWE. The longer you have the case, the more likely it is that eventually someone will challenge you for it. However, the first (and so far, only) person to lose his briefcase barely had it for a month.

Mr. Kennedy won the third WrestleMania Money in the Bank ladder match (at WM XXIII), defeating seven other men in the process. He intended to cash in at WrestleMania the following year, but he would never get the chance.

Edge goaded Kennedy to put the briefcase up on Raw five weeks after he won it. He then assaulted Kennedy before the match, beating him from pillar to post. The ref was ready to waive the match off, but Kennedy insisted he ring the bell, then fell victim to a spear and seven seconds later was sans briefcase.

In reality, Kennedy was injured and was expected to be out for some time, so the decision was made to take the briefcase off him. Edge would waste little time, cashing in the next night during a Smackdown taping against a decimated Undertaker and winning the World Heavyweight Championship. Ultimate Opportunist indeed.
