Absolutely that would be the best thing for him. Sheamus is at a point in his career where he's still in his prime years in his mid-30s and he's also an established guy that had been in the main event scene for about five years now. Instead of booking him as a face, WWE should turn him heel. A good way to do the heel turn would be in the Rumble match itself. He could be a surprise entrant, look like he's working with a babyface and then eliminate that guy from the match. Whether it's Daniel Bryan, Roman Reigns, Dean Ambrose or Dolph Ziggler, they just have to make it a point to where Sheamus comes off as a jerk. The next night on Raw, he could destroy that guy again (let's say it's Ziggler) and then shake hands with The Authority to show that he is aligned with them. There's nothing else for him to do as a face. A heel turn is the right move for him. The reason that aligning him with The Authority works is because anybody that is working with them will be hated right away. The WWE roster is loaded with babyfaces at the top right now. They need more heels. Sheamus would be a good fit.
