From @MikeyTRRP: What now for Curtis Axel? Can anything be done to salvage his career? Would a spell in NXT help him like it helped Tyson Kidd?
Axel is no longer going to do the "AxelMania" gimmick due to Hulk Hogan getting fired, so it's no surprise that a question like this came up. It's not like the gimmick was that great long term, but at least it was something for him to do. There's no clear answer as to what he will do because he's just a midcard wrestler that doesn't have much direction just like his partner Damien Sandow, Jack Swagger, Adam Rose, Zack Ryder and so many others that usually appear on TV just to put over somebody else. Axel will likely remain on the sidelines while hoping that creative has something for him. What WWE should consider is putting him in a tag team with Sandow or a guy like Swagger, who needs something new. Maybe he can be a Real American with Swagger and make them heels with Zeb Colter managing them. WWE needs more teams right now, so it wouldn't be a bad idea to try to get that gimmick going again. Putting him in NXT for several months like they did with Kidd last could help, but he's also been down that road before. A tag team would probably work best for him.
