10 WWE Questions You Most Want Answered (June 22nd)
4. Why Is CM Punk So Badly Missed?
Mamoun wants to know why CM Punk is so badly missed, and it's a fairly complex answer. Several factors combined to make Punk one of the most popular stars of a generation; he was a fantastic wrestler, immensely charismatic, and the first WWE talent to openly embrace smark-darling status (even directly labelling himself "the voice of the voiceless").
Another key reason is that Punk actually succeeded, and did smash through the "glass ceiling" for a time - at least until The Rock arrived to end his record title reign and hog two successive WrestleMania main events. He will likely be remembered as a revolutionary figure alongside the likes of Bret Hart and Steve Austin, a new breed who managed to usher WWE into a period of change.
There's also Punk's acrimonious, opinion-dividing departure, which solidified him as a martyr in the eyes of many.
Underlying all of this, however, is the fact that the Chicago native's particular brand of charisma aligned perfectly with his key demographic. For better or worse, we smarky fans often like to see ourselves as intellectuals - keen analysts of the product before us.
The fact that Punk was at such odds with WWE (just as many fans felt themselves to be) really cemented him as "one of us", for lack of a better term, and ensured an enduring legacy despite the company's best efforts.
