10 WWE Questions You Most Want Answered - SummerSlam 2016 Retrospective
5. Why Are So Many People Annoyed When The Wrestling Was Good?
In terms of pure in-ring action, I'd say SummerSlam was a perfectly average (maybe slightly above average) show. Cena was AJ was, of course, excellent, and the two title matches pretty much delivered in terms of action.
However, as strange as it sounds, good wrestling doesn't necessarily make a good PPV. The event suffered from an over-reliance on authority figures, the deflating non-finish to the main event, a series of weakly-built feuds (such as Crews vs. Miz and the tag titles match) - and, of course, the hilarious involvement of Jon Stewart.
Of course, it didn't help that the show was forced to follow NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn II, an event which saw excellent wrestling and excellent storytelling.
