Santino was pretty much the definition of a jobber for most of his WWE run - that is, of course, with the exception of a couple of months in 2011 and 2012. Not only did he finish as the runner-up in the 2011 Royal Rumble, but a year later he competed in SmackDown's Elimination Chamber for the World Heavyweight title, narrowly beaten by Daniel Bryan after out-lasting four others.

Given the years of comedy skits (and sometimes it really did feel like each individual segment was a year long) that preceded Santino's pursuit of title gold, it was impossible for WWE to treat it as anything other than an enormous aberration. Sure enough, he was shortly thereafter demoted back where he, in all fairness, probably belonged.
