Unfortunately he had problems with substance abuse which derailed his career at various points, but by 2009 he had got clean and WWE felt he was reliable enough for a push. Believing him to be drug free they got behind him with his first WWE title reign in late 2008. The thing is, what was meant to be a work, turned into being a real scenario. Hardy hadn't managed to shake his old demons and left WWE in August of that year.
