There was a time in 2017 when it looked as if WWE had become obsessed with pushing Baron Corbin. He was the surprise winner of the Money in the Bank briefcase and was gifted with a string of victories on SmackDown Live. That all changed in August, when Corbin failed to cash in the briefcase and was then dispatched by a rampant John Cena at SummerSlam.

That's not to say that the company has completely cooled on Corbin. He remains a force in the upper midcard on SmackDown and had a decent run as United States Champion at the tail end of the year.

Corbin is a rare beast in that he's a heel who is genuinely disliked by the audience, and that is the sort of thing that can catapult a wrestler into the main event scene. It happened with Jinder Mahal in 2017 and it wouldn't be a huge surprise to see it happen with Corbin in 2018.
