Similar to Edge, Rey Mysterio was already well on his way to super stardom when he first feuded with Randy Orton in 2006, except for how he had yet to win a world title in WWE at that point.

Mysterio's abrupt push toward the top of the card was a direct result of Eddie Guerrero's unfortunate death at the end of 2005. That Royal Rumble match was Orton's to win (as he was originally penciled in to face Batista for the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 22), so not only did he play second fiddle to Mysterio heading into the event, he did everything imaginable to make him look like a star.

Although Orton beat Mysterio at No Way Out, he was the one who ate the pinfall loss at WrestleMania, which resulted in Mysterio becoming the new World Heavyweight champion. As a former world champion himself, The Legend Killer gave Mysterio more credibility as champ than anyone else The Master of the 619 faced during his title run that year.

Orton was the perfect person for Mysterio to beat so that he could prove himself to the masses he was world champion material.
