"The Rated R Superstar" spent the 2000s making a name for himself as the most despised villain in the company, a devious and vindictive heel that cheated any way he could. He also had a habit of using women to generate interest and political favor on-screen, as seen with his relationships with Vickie Guerrero and Lita. By 2011, he had become a respected babyface, a man whose accomplishments and penchant for entertaining the audience earned him the adulation of the WWE Universe. The face of SmackDown, he reigned over the brand as the world heavyweight champion, firmly entrenched in a budding rivalry with Alberto Del Rio over the brand's top prize. Unfortunately, years of bumping off ladders, through tables and across the squared circle helped led to the systematic deterioration of a neck that had already been surgically repaired. At WrestleMania XXVII, Edge successfully retained his title against Del Rio in the night's opening contest. It was the last official, televised match he would wrestle. He would compete in two multi-man tag matches, winning both, but his win over Del Rio was the last signature victory in a career that would be immortalized one year later with a Hall of Fame induction.
