10 WWE Superstars Who Got Too Much Too Soon

2. Jack Swagger

Not to be harsh, but the nowadays Jake Hager has spent long enough in the wrestling industry for us to safely say that he isn’t a top guy. Not everyone is destined to be a main eventer, and as the muscle for Chris Jericho in AEW, Hager has carved out a nice little spot for himself.

But back in 2009, a popular year for these bad decisions, WWE tried to push the then-Jack Swagger as a credible main event threat. The ‘All-American American’ quickly won the ECW Championship, four months after he arrived, and was suddenly the top of the third brand.

As unconvincing as a champion as he was, he was soon switched to RAW and hunted the US Title for most of the year, before WWE turned up the heat on his push in 2010.

Winning the Money in the Bank ladder match at WrestleMania XXVI, Swagger cashed in his contract less than a week later to take the World Heavyweight Championship off, ironically, Chris Jericho. Less than a year after he had arrived on the main roster, Swagger was now one of its main champions.

The fans saw through it, offering little reaction to him or his promos, and with a fairly cumbersome ring style, he just wasn’t ready for such a push. He lost the belt two months later, and unlike McIntyre or Lashley, Swagger never recovered and was never perceived as a top player again until his eventual release in 2017.
