Triple H and John Cena were pencilled in for almost a year to close WrestleMania 23 in what would have been the rematch from their dramatic main event at WrestleMania 22. In the lead-up to ‘Mania 23 though Triple H suffered a devastating torn right quadriceps with a botched spinebuster at New Year’s Revolution (2007) when D-Generation X took on Rated RKO for the World Tag Team Championship. He wouldn’t be seen on WWE TV again until SummerSlam.

Because of this WWE had to quickly rewrite upcoming imminent storylines, looking to Triple H’s DX comrade Shawn Michaels to take his spot against John Cena at WrestleMania 23 in what ended up being a thriller of a main event. Creative hurriedly wrote a Raw for Shawn to defeat Randy Orton and Edge in a Triple Threat match for the opportunity to take on Cena for the title at the big event. Then an angle was built around Cena and HBK becoming World Tag Team Champions before WrestleMania 23, with Cena wary of Shawn turning on him sometime in the build-up to it.

When in need or doubt in wrestling, call in Mr. WrestleMania Shawn Michaels to save the main event.
