He's the self-proclaimed greatest Intercontinental Champion of all-time and because of his record-setting reign, which still stands today as the longest in WWE history, was one of the most hated WWE superstars of the 1980s.

The Honky Tonk Man was portrayed as an easily beatable champion, yet because of both luck and underhanded tactics, was able to avoid defeat and thus hang on to his coveted Intercontinental Championship, for over 14 months.

Any longtime WWE fan likely knows as much, but what not everyone realizes is that the former Rythym & Blues member actually debuted in WWE as a babyface.

Vince McMahon actually believed that the fans would get behind an Elvis impersonator, but quickly turned the tables once he realized that was not the case. Honky was paired with Jimmy Hart, a notorious heel manager, and would become one of the most heat-seeking talents of the Hulkamania era.

As good as he was in his eventual role as a villain, both during his prime in the '80s as well as his multiple returns to the promotion since then, the Hunka Hunka Hunka Honky Love singer was meant to be a fan favorite before his career really took off.
