10 WWE Title Reigns That Never Lived Up To The Victory
3. Finn Balor (2016)
What could have been, eh?
With NXT becoming a force of nature in WWE, a new wave of superstars were being primed to take over on the main roster. None more so than Finn Balor, whose explosive in-ring work, coupled with his awesome ‘Demon’ gimmick, looked set to dominate the company.
And they got off to a great start, with Balor being one of the first draft picks of the new brand split, and then winning the tournament to fight for the newly created WWE Universal Championship at SummerSlam 2016. He even went over Roman Reigns, clean as a whistle.
At the Pay Per View, WWE threatened the dawn of a new era, as ‘The Prince’ defeated Seth Rollins to become the first ever WWE Universal Champion, and the fans were fully onboard.
But fate can be a right b*tch, and Balor separated his shoulder during the title bout. The very next night, he had to relinquish the belt. A title reign that threatened to usher in a new dawn for WWE was quickly extinguished, and Balor has never been placed in such a prominent position in the six years since.
