Savage's fourteen-month stranglehold on the Intercontinental title finally ended with the conclusion of WWE's best match of the 1980s. Once Ricky Steamboat fulfilled his revenge saga, Savage provided the viewing audience with an enduring visual, openly weeping into the crook of his elbow during the ring-cart ride back to the locker room. In a year, the Intercontinental title would be so far in Savage's rear view, after a historic showing at WrestleMania IV. The Macho Man would be the change of pace for Hulk Hogan's four years atop WWE once he captured the supreme belt at the end of a fourteen-man tournament. By dropping the IC gold, it wasn't long before Savage was on the babyface path, and an ideal replacement for Hogan on top.
