10 WWE Wrestlers Destroyed By Backstage Politics

3. Matt Hardy

Matt Hardy Lita Alright, it's soap opera time again. Strap in... Matt Hardy and Lita were both an on-screen and off-screen couple for a while. In 2005, Lita cheated on Matt with Edge. Matt, understandably, was rather upset and said that he could no longer work in the same company as Edge and insisted that Edge be fired. WWE management, agreed with the first part €“ the part about them no longer being able to work together €“ but not the second part, and so they fired Matt instead. Edge, of course, was the bigger star. So after a brief spell working for some indie promotions, Matt returned and began a true-to-life program with Edge, with the cheating incident as the focal point of the story. According to Edge himself, he regretted the way he hurt his friend Matt, but did not enjoy turning the whole thing into a wrestling angle. That was all Matt's idea. After the feud, Edge became incredibly over as a top heel, and went on to become WWE champion. Matt, well, didn't. While the "worked shoot" aspect of the story was thoroughly entertaining, it didn't really do any favours for Matt's character. He was extremely over in the story, but once it ended it didn't leave him with much. Now, Matt can be found wrestling with his brother Jeff (again) in TNA.
