In 2002, much of the build-up to the Undisputed Championship match between Triple H and Chris Jericho at WrestleMania X8 focused on the former's collapsed marriage with former flame Stephanie McMahon.

This made a lot of sense, in some ways. Despite being a nominal heel, Y2J was still pretty popular with large sections of the crowd; alligning him with Stephanie - despised by most for her role in The Alliance - ensured that fans would be pulling for HHH.

But the writers kind of overcooked it a little bit. After a few weeks of her by his side, Jericho began to look less like one of the biggest wrestlers in the World Wrestling Federation and more like an awkward third wheel in the company's most famous relationship breakdown.

Consequently, the loss he suffered on the Grandest Stage of Them All proved costly to his overall main event aspirations. In fact, it would be a further six years before the Canadian actually managed to recapture the world title, so damaged was his credibility after a couple of months playing gooseberry.
