11 Burning Questions For WWE Extreme Rules 2016
Who walks with the IC Title? Could Styles pull off a shocker?
The post-WrestleMania doldrums are upon us, as ratings have fallen back off, and rumors are flowing that even Vince McMahon is tiring of the Roman Reigns experiment. Injuries continue to besiege the roster. But that’s not to say that all is doom and gloom.
The rivalry between Reigns and AJ Styles has elevated the Phenomenal One in casual fans’ eyes and vaulted Luke Gallows, Karl Anderson and even the Usos to the top of the card. Sure, it’s not translating into ratings or critical success, but half-credit for trying something different. The four-way battle over the Intercontinental Championship has been great TV and made the secondary title feel important again. And Charlotte is coming into her own as a heel champion, which will make her ultimate defeat all the more rewarding.
But here, three weeks after the last WWE PPV, we stand looking at a special event that is largely a replay of Payback, just with more stipulations. XXXX matches involve the same players from Payback. Does that mean we’re in for more of the same – a placeholder of a PPV – or could WWE have some surprises in store?
Let’s take a look at some of the big questions that need answering Sunday night at Extreme Rules…
11. Are Kalisto’s Days Numbered?
Ever since winning the United States Championship, Kalisto has been little more than a CINO, a Champ In Name Only. Aside from a surprisingly good match against Ryback on the Payback kickoff show earlier this month, the champion has had an unmemorable run with no signature title defenses.
Couple that with the fact that Rusev seems to be resurgent ever since the League of Nations mercifully split, and you have a recipe for a new U.S. champ. It feels like now is the right time to change horses, after nearly four months as a largely ineffective champion.
And with John Cena returning in a week, you’ve got to think he’ll be coming after the title he lost and never got a rematch.
