The very first Clash of the Champions took place in 1988, and as explained earlier was Jim Crocket's counter to the WWF putting on Survivor Series to damage WCW's Starrcade rating. Clash wouldn't quite do the damage to WrestleMania that Crocket hoped but over the next 30+ editions a whole host of great wrestling went down.

The first Clash was headlined by the most classic WCW main event of them all: Ric Flair vs. Sting. The match went to a 45-minute time limit draw thanks to TV time constraints, and whilst it wasn't a perfect 45 minutes or anything, it was arguably the moment that Sting established himself as a top level player in professional wrestling.

J.J. Dilion was suspended in a cage above the ring for the duration, and there were even judges to decide the match if the time limit expired. Of course, the three judges would turn out to be of no use whatsoever, but this was really was the performance that put Sting on the map. What a way to end the first Clash of the Champions this was.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
