11 Most Influential Japanese Wrestlers Of All Time

8. The Crush Gals (Chigusa Nagayo & Lioness Asuka)

Crush Gals1 What if you were told that Japan had its own equivalent of Hulkamania in the 1980s? And how would you feel if, instead of it being centered on a tanned, 6€™7 man with 24-inch pythons, it was based on two women, who became the most successful women€™s tag team in Japanese wrestling history? That was the success of the Crush Gals, Chigusa Nagayo and Lioness Asuka. During the 1980s, women€™s wrestling was at its peak in popularity, and the Crush Gals were arguably the biggest team out of all of them. Their feud with The Jumping Bomb Angels, another strong tag team, was so popular that their matches brought in ratings of around 12.0 on a consistent basis. Imagine if any women€™s tag team in WWE or TNA had that kind of drawing power; it would shake the wrestling industry for certain. Both of these women were incredibly successful, winning both singles and tag team titles in Japan€™s top women€™s promotions at the time, All Japan Women€™s Pro Wrestling and GAEA Japan, the latter being founded by Nagayo herself. Furthermore, both of them broke the stereotype that only male wrestlers could be big draws. They proved that the right amount of skill and charisma can lead to enormous success.
