He recently captured the NXT Championship for the first time after winning an explosive match against Adrian Neville, his longtime friend turned rival. The connection Zayn has with the NXT crowd is something that can't be manufactured; they have simply bonded with him deeply over time due to his work ethic and skills between the ropes. Zayn was known as El Generico during his time in Ring Of Honor, where he competed under a luchadore mask. From 2005 to 2012, he became one of the most popular competitors in the promotion, and his amazing feuds with Kevin Steen (who also recently debuted in NXT as Kevin Owens) could be credited with attracting the attention of WWE. In fact, their rivalry began when Steen turned heel on Generico after they had been tag team partners and won the titles together. Perhaps in a few years WWE fans will be treated to a renewal of the conflict on the grandest stage of them all?
