The I Quit match is probably, in principle, the most gruelling gimmick matches in wrestling. While people losing matches because they quit isn't uncommon, the act of verbalising it makes it an admission that you can't take any more, and you're lesser than the guy you're meant to have been able to beat. Winning an I Quit match more often than not takes people to extremes of violence, and essentially to committing acts of torture so their opponent think enough is enough and are willing to say it aloud. So when The Rock & Mankind faced each other in an I Quit match, Rock was faced with the task of making Mick Foley give up. Foley being a man with a legendary tolerance for pain and violence. A man whose ear literally came off during a match, and who introduced everyone to the world of getting your face driven into a pile of thumbtacks. Foley's pain tolerance was a much a part of his character as it was real. The match is notorious for it's brutality, especially the 10 entirely unprotected chair shots to Foley's head while he was handcuffed. And that was after he suffered getting thrown from the stands onto one of those random boxes that are always in the electrical bit near the entrance. The story was that Mankind wouldn't quit, no matter what The Rock threw his way. So. like any good heel would, Rock resorted to cheating by playing a recording from when Foley had previously said 'I-Quit' in the build up to the match. The referee accepted the words as coming directly from Foley, and The Rock became the first person to win a match thanks to a voice-over.
