7. He Was Always His Own Biggest Fan
WWE.comPunk was convinced he belonged at the top of the card right from the beginning. Now, one can look at this as the kind of towering self-belief that is absolutely necessary to power a loner misfit kid from Chicago to the top of the industry or one can argue that its the kind of overweening self-aggrandisement that makes older, wiser heads want to slap you in the back of yours. Its unarguable that Punk rubbed a fair number of people up the wrong way on his circuitous route to the top of the industry. After all, this is a man not exactly backward about coming forward and telling people he should be in the main event. The fact that Punk was champion for 434 days and still came second to John Cena rankled with him hugely, something he wasnt shy about telling people. Whether you like him or not, its a fair assessment that a big part of Punks problem in getting a consistent push at the beginning of his WWE career was largely other people and by that, we mean other people not liking him. Whether you want to rehash the CM Punk party line trotted out on his DVD as other people not believing that he was worth main event status as a performer or whether you just believe that they thought he was an arrogant ass, depends largely on your own opinion of Phil Brooks.
