12 Things We Learned From The Eighth Wonder Of The World: The True Story Of André The Giant
2. Just How Many People Wanted A Piece Of The Giant
It's almost redundant to say that André the Giant was a major attraction wherever he went, but the schedule of the Eighth Wonder of the World became absolutely ridiculous during the peak of his popularity.
As alluded to elsewhere in this piece, the longer that André stayed in one territory, the less special his presence there became. And as such, that meant a lot of travelling for the Frenchman.
Keep in mind that this was 1983 and before wrestlers were travelling nationally on a weekly or daily basis, but André did reveal his nuts schedule of the time during a rare sit-down interview on Montreal TV with journalist Pierre Nadeau.
Breaking down just his past four days, André was:
- In Jackson, Mississippi on Thursday
- In Houston, Texas on Friday
- In Texarkana, Texas on Saturday afternoon
- In Little Rock, Texas on Saturday night
- In Lafayette, Louisiana on Sunday afternoon
- In Lake Charles, Louisiana on Sunday night
Then the following Monday night, that was when he was in Montreal, Quebec for this interview. As explained in this new book, André would often wrestle nine times per week, in nine different cities. In the days leading up to that Montreal interview alone, he'd travelled 1,300 miles and spent 20 hours on the road before taking his flight to Canada.
Everybody wanted to see André the Giant, and André was dedicated to making sure this demand was met whilst also making the most of the paydays that were on offer during these years.
While this travel schedule would be crazy to uphold for any wrestler, this was all only amplified further by the sheer size of André and the discomfort travelling brought for him.
