12 Ups & 5 Downs From AEW Full Gear

3. Styles Clash Falls Flat

Shawn Spears Joey Janela
AEW

Shawn Spears vs. Joey Janela was a solid little wrestling that tried to present itself as a styles clash, though this ultimately worked against it. Spears and Janela were working from different playbooks. 'The Chairman' is a grinding WWE-style Sports Entertainer, while 'The Bad Boy' is a hard-bumping daredevil. This could've created a compelling dynamic if their styles had meshed, but they didn't, and there wasn't enough crowd heat to take it to the next level either.

Janela flung his body around with the same reckless abandon present in most of his matches, creating most of the bout's excitement in the process, though Tully Blanchard deserves props for assisting the Spike Piledriver on the floor that preceded Spears' victory with the C4. His client was solid but unspectacular, though tying Joey's hair to the back of the turnbuckle at least created a cool visual, particularly as 'The Bad Boy' ripped his own hair out to escape.

AEW are committed to this Spears heel character, even if it doesn't seem to be working at the moment. Let's see if his "No More Garbage Wrestling" campaign starts taking him to better places.
