13 Ups & 4 Downs For Impact Wrestling In 2019
12. One Full Year
... Taya Valkyrie made history in 2019.
She captured the Knockouts Championship from Tessa Blanchard at Homecoming, and remains the champ to this day. As a result, she became the longest-reigning Knockouts Champion in history, holding the title for a full 365 days at the time of writing. No matter what happens in the division going forward, Taya's name will always be synonymous with the female talent in Impact Wrestling.
Some of the matches she's had during her reign thus far have been either decent or excellent, with her Bound For Glory defence against Tenille Dashwood and the Monsters Ball at Slammiversary opposite Rosemary, Su Yung, and Jessicka Havok being two main highlights. At times, she comes across as a bit of a cowardly champion, seeing as she tends to cheat during all of her championship defences. While you could easily throw this off as being heel heat, it becomes a bit more difficult to make it believable she's lasted this long as champ if she has to use such tactics in near enough every title match.
'Wera Loca' in 2019 was the sort of performer the knockouts division had been missing, harking back to the dominant days of Awesome Kong and Gail Kim as champion. Regardless of whether or not she loses the strap to either Jordynne Grace or ODB at Hard to Kill, it'll be impossible to forget the impact she had on the division as a whole, not just for her own career.
