John Cena won his first WWE Championship at WrestleMania 21 defeating John ‘Bradshaw’ Layfield. He debuted his now iconic spinner title on the 14 April 2005 edition of SmackDown after JBL stole the original. It is odd to re-watch and remember how over with the crowd Cena was at this point in his career. It was while defending this championship that Cena’s popularity began to wane. He had prime Hulkamania booking, scoring a PPV victory over Shawn Michaels, two over Chris Jericho, and three over Kurt Angle.

New Year’s Revolution 2006

Cena was tasked with defending his championship in an Elimination Chamber match against Kane, Chris Masters, Carlito, Kurt Angle, and Shawn Michaels. Cena won the match, but it was a disappointing showing. Despite being in from the beginning of the Chamber, Cena only eliminated Carlito, and he did so with a roll-up. However, due to Cena’s endurance, as well as being busted open, he was convincingly vulnerable for Edge to cash in his Money in the Bank contract. Edge handed in his briefcase and easily dispatched of Cena with two spears. Cena would retain and lose the spinner championship several times during his career, most famously to CM Punk at Money in the Bank 2011.
