Consider this: since winning the WWE Title from JBL at 2005's WrestleMania 21, John Cena had only allowed just eight clean jobs by the time SummerSlam 2008 rolled around. Further, only four of those losses came in singles matches, with the others taking place in everything from tag-team bouts to Triple Threat and Fatal-4-Ways.

As big a star as Batista was in 2008, there were no guarantees that he'd be the one to prevail at SummerSlam. After all, Cena had just come back from serious pectoral injury the previous January, and the prevailing sense was that he'd be back in the World Title or WWE Championship mix permanently.

Cena wasn't in the title scene until Survivor Series, mainly due to the herniated disc he suffered at SummerSlam, but Batista was the one booked to win anyway. Even without the unfortunate injury, WWE had written Cena to be pinned cleanly by a Batista Bomb.
