14 Times Really Weird Sh*t Went Down At WrestleMania 32

It’s not really about who won the match, although there’s a case to be answered that Ric Flair’s ‘drunken manager’ interference belonged more in a match shown on free television rather than a historic showcase at WrestleMania.

No, the weird thing here was that the WWE felt that the first ever WWE Women’s Champion, and the performer who would bring the women’s division into the 21st century and away from the dated cheesecake cliché of the Diva’s and the butterfly belt, should be one of the most obnoxious heels on the roster.

Considering that the revelation of the title belt to the live audience came with the handout of a press release on the subject, and considering that Vince McMahon tweeted that the overhaul to the women’s division represented an evolution for the company, it seems really weird to place the onus for carrying through that message of change on such a negative, mean-spirited character.

As a spitfire, no-surrender babyface with surprising charisma, and the hardest working woman in the new division, Becky Lynch is a far better fit for that story. Was it backstage politics, because of who Charlotte’s father is? Was it a deliberate swerve, because everyone expected a title change?

Whatever the case, this was still the highlight of the night in every single respect: and every time that the announcers pointedly referred to the three women in the ring as 'Superstars', Luna Vachon, the Fabulous Moolah and Mae Young all received a brand new set of wings.
