15 Biggest Political Power Plays By WWE Talents
7. Mick Foley Wins WWE Title SummerSlam '99
Mick Foley found himself smack-dab in the middle of a political power play in the summer of 1999 though it had little to do with his character of Mankind.
Stone Cold Steve Austin was riding high as WWE Champion and the main event for SummerSlam '99 called for a one-on-one title defense against WWE's newest main-event hopeful, Triple H. Hunter was far from a proven draw at the time and Austin doubted The Game's ability to make it as a legit main event player. Austin was so convinced that Triple H wasn't ready for the spot that he refused to do the job to him at the upcoming SummerSlam. The Game was supposed to win the WWE title from Austin at SummerSlam, but Austin manuevered to have plans altered to match his liking.
Instead of a one-on-one match with Hunter, Mankind was added to the mix and the main event became a Triple Threat Match. Not only did Mankind benefit from being added to the SummerSlam headliner, he was now scheduled to win the WWE Championship only to turn around and drop it to Triple H the next night on Raw.
Austin agreed to drop the title to Foley and The Game's career highlight up to that point came on an episode of Monday Night Raw rather than at SummerSlam '99.
