15 Bizarre Wrestling Gimmicks You Won't Believe Happened More Than Once

14. Bayou Psychopath

If you didn't know, Cape Fear was huge in 1990's pro wrestling circles. Stone Cold Steve Austin will occasionally sing the praises of the film on his podcast, and Vince McMahon was especially enamored with its "heel", Max Cady. It's a haunting performance by the inimitable Robert De Niro, but that hasn't stopped McMahon from having guys imitate it. His first attempt was with Waylon Mercy, otherwise known as resort casual Dan Spivey. Mercy is lost to history, but he managed to leave a lasting legacy in Bray Wyatt. The Wyatt patriarch has elements of the original Cady, some of Spivey's soft-spoken creepiness, but also a heaping helping of Mick Foley's gaspy whisper-yelling. It may have taken nearly twenty years, but it's pretty neat that Vince was finally able to create a wrestling villain out of the character so compelling that he forced the great Rick Rude to forgo cleaning some fish that he and Steve Austin caught. True story.
