Why WWE Is Dropping Free PLE Content On ESPN (WWE News)
Bad news for any WWE fans hoping to see a free hour or 2 of SummerSlam on ESPN.
The Wrestling Observer has served up details regarding ESPN coverage for this year's SummerSlam 2026 PLE across 1-2 August. They've noted that WWE themselves sent out word on exactly what should be expected via the service for August's bumper weekender.
In short, there won't be any ESPN TV coverage for the first hour of either night in Minneapolis.
The Observer reckons this shows that WWE/ESPN think giving away the first hour of the PLE each night could be hurting actual subscriptions to the service. For much of 2026, the company has been touting an hour-long freebie and front-loading cards with some major matches to try and draw as many eyeballs as possible to the show hoping people will then stick around for more.
Instead, there will be 3-hour long pre-shows on ESPN between 3-6pm each day. SportsCenter will also be heavy on WWE/SummerSlam coverage, and there will be features on Get Up, First Take and other ESPN programming as well. On top of that, a SummerSlam special will begin airing at 6pm on Tuesday evening.
That'll be replayed all week long until the big event itself.
Cody Rhodes interviewing Tom Brady for his podcast will show on both ESPN and ESPN 2 all week to further bolster WWE's mini-takeover of the network before SummerSlam.
In theory, this could alter the way Triple H and his creative team format the cards for both nights. If they don't need to take the freebie audience into account, then they can theoretically open with whatever they please. That could be worth keeping an eye on.
