Edge had been on the shelf with a torn Achilles since the previous July. Since that time, his tag team partner, Chris Jericho, repeatedly put Edge down and called him weak before replacing him as Tag Team champion with The Big Show. WWE had kept quiet on the status of Edge's recovery, and with good reason.

Edge came out as the 29th entrant and surprised Jericho and everybody else in the building, eliminating Jericho and eventually eliminating John Cena to win the Rumble and go on to the main event (kind of) of WrestleMania, where he would ultimately lose to Chris Jericho.
