Championships are one of wrestling's most vital commodities. Without championships, wrestlers would have nothing to strive for, nothing to achieve. When people reflect on their careers, the success of their time is often measured with the amount of titles they've won. Not only that, but titles are often the linchpin that major storylines revolve around. The stories involving the championships are considered as the main attraction of the current product. The wrestlers who are considered to be the best performers are rewarded with a title. With the titles being so crucial to wrestling, it therefore means that the conditions in which titles are won and lost are one of the most important parts of the storytelling.. In the search for innovation, creatives have found unique and unusual ways to move titles from one wrestler to another. While the majority of titles are lost in one of two traditional ways - either by pinfall or submission - there have been plenty of other ways that championships have been lost. As with any creative decision, there's good and bad. While the conditions surrounding unusual title losses aren't always popular, and in some cases cruel, they're sometimes necessary and at least, memorable. Let's run them down...
15. Losing Your Clothes
During WWE's more risque days, stripping matches enjoyed a certain level of popularity. The concept behind the matches was winning by stripping your opponent of all their clothes. The two most memorable variations of the match were the Bra & Panties match, and the Evening Gown match. These matches mostly occured during the late 90s and early 2000s, before the Divas division reached the athletic heights it would achieve later on. As stripping matches became popular (wonder why that was?), eventually the Women's Championship was defended, and ultimately lost in a Evening Gown match. When a wrestler is told they're going to lose a prized possession such as a championship, we can assume they'd want to lose it in an epic battle, where their opponent only just manages to beat them and you come out looking like a hero, even if you lost. Losing your title because somebody ripped off your dress probably isn't what most champions envisage.
