AJ was born on a military base in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina where his father was serving in the marines. Austin says the building he wrestled in in Camp Lejeune was the hottest building he's ever worked in and AJ agrees. He doesn't remember anything about base life because his family moved to Gainesville, Georgia when he was just a year old, but he says once a marine, always a marine.

Steve asks what it was like growing up with a marine as a father. AJ says that his father definitely loved he and his four brothers, but he had some problems, confessing that he was an alcoholic.

"When he was drinking he was a terrible father. Took it too far a little bit sometimes, coming home looking for a fight, and took it out on his kids and sometimes his wife. There were some difficult times. Even though bad stuff like that happened, I still knew that my dad loved me."

AJ admits that his father was a loose cannon and everyday he would hope that he didn't come home drinking, because he knew "somebody was going to get tore up."
