17 Things We Learned From John Cena On Chris Jericho's WWE Network Podcast

14. Relationship With Vince

Chris asks John what his relationship with Vince McMahon is like in 2015:
"I think we both share the same vision. I think sometimes, creatively we're different, but I love this company. There are people who say they love the pro wrestling business. I love this company. Because I love the way it's run, I love what we produce, and the guy who runs it is the first to show up and the last to leave. And I've been lucky enough to surround myself with people like that for my entire life. So I took a real liking to the way that this guy does things. It's just 'all in, here we go, go forward.' My legitimate goal is to take this to places we've never been. I'm very focused on getting into China, I'm very focused on getting into India. We need to go more places. It's not like 'Hey, what do you want to do for your resume' or "How many wins do you want to get before you retire?' No, I just want to leave this thing a hundred times bigger than when I walked in."
For anyone who has ever wondered why John Cena continues to receive the megapush over a decade after becoming "the guy" for WWE and why Vince is so willing to seemingly do anything to maintain that status quo, you just got your answer right there in one paragraph. Jericho asks if they have meetings, and Cena says that they really don't but that he thinks Vince trusts him to go out and tell his story as best he can. Chris asks if he still gets yelled at and Cena replies that everybody does, and it doesn't p*ss him off at all. He credits it as evidence of Vince's passion and says it keeps him going. The two agree that McMahon's enthusiasm is infectious, sometimes to a fault. Jericho tells the story of facing Cena in his first pay-per-view match where the scheduled finish was Y2J going over, and he says he called Vince and told him that Cena needed to win because he had "something special", while Vince vehemently disagreed with him. John then talks about the first night he ever met Vince, the night he got put on TV to take on Kurt Angle due to Undertaker's absence. He cracks on his haircut and says he was thrown into Vince's office and the only response he got from the boss was a disgusted face and a demand to 'cut his hair!"
