17 Things We Learned From John Cena On Chris Jericho's WWE Network Podcast

12. The Brass Ring Speech

Jericho inquires what Cena thought of the brass ring speech that Vince gave on the Steve Austin Show, and we get the most diplomatic answer possible.
" I loved it, I loved it because as much as he'll yell at you and tell you 'Man, you need to do this and that', he also can hear the audience. And I say this to everyone, and I do it. If you go out there and they're on their feet...you'll come back and get criticized but you'll get another chance. And I think that's the most important thing. If you feel something is right, don't be afraid. Do it. Don't do it because somebody above you or a person in authority was like 'You can never do this, or you can never do that, because Vince says never do this.' We got rules, we're a TV-PG program. But, man go out there and take chances."
The problem with practically everything he just said is that there's precedent for guys following that advice to the letter - Zach Ryder, Cesaro, Dean Ambrose, etc. - and suffering for it, while Vince ignored the audience that Cena claims he listens to. Jericho asks if he thinks it's because the program is so regimented and scripted that it has guys afraid to take chances, and Cena responds that he thinks you just have to know the rules and work within them.
