By the late 1970s, there was a new major player in the WWWF - Vincent Kennedy McMahon, Vincent James's son. The younger McMahon had started working for the WWWF in the late 1960s, but his profile grew over the next ten years. By the time the company dropped the "Wide" in 1979 and simply became the World Wrestling Federation (a change for which Vincent K. McMahon had pushed), Junior was working side by side with his father.

Though the elder McMahon was still technically in charge, there was no question that Vince Jr. would take over someday - and while much has been written about the national expansion for which he was responsible, in some way, it can all be traced to 21 February 1980. On that day, Vince Jr. and his wife, Linda, incorporated Titan Sports, the company that would end up as the parent to the WWF brand.

The birth of Titan quickly led McMahon to build an empire. Two years later, he bought the assets to the Capitol Wrestling Corporation - which was still in existence as the WWF's parent company - from his father, gaining control over the promotion. From there, he went on to raid other outfits across the country in an attempt to make the WWF a nationwide entity.
