He seems older than time itself, but he's the original, the immortal one, the icon. Sure he's cheesy, almost wearing the American flag itself like a cape, but he's a damn fine role model to the kiddies, telling them to eat their vitamins, say their prayers and be the best 'them' they can be. He's been beaten in battle, but not often, seeming invincible in his heyday. Even though he's been overtaken by more complicated and timely characters, he's still popular today and often-imitated. Fans look back with fondness to the days when danger would rear its ugly head, forcing him to rip his shirt open and head into battle.
