No, not the lady who would eventually valet 'Macho Man' Randy Savage in WCW. Gorgeous George was a true trailblazer in professional wrestling, a man who was ahead of his time when it came to character, working a crowd, and all-round presentation. Both Muhammad Ali and James Brown have acknowledged that they owe a hunk stylistically to George, with the Gorgeous one famously telling Ali that 'a lot of people will pay to see someone shut your mouth'.

Gorgeous George is also credited with being the first professional wrestling to be accompanied to the ring by signature entrance music. Fittingly, he made his way to the ring as 'Pomp and Circumstance' echoed around the arenas, a theme that my generation will know as the entrance music for, yes, 'Macho Man' Randy Savage.

Gorgeous George was considered the first truly cowardly professional wrestling heel.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
