Taking a break from singles matches, tag team wrestling was a fairly logical evolution in professional wrestling. Tag team wrestling was the original gimmick match in a number of ways, and the first tag team match is widely accepted to have taken place in San Francisco in 1901. The competitors aren't known, so let's just assume it was Matt & Jervis Cottonbelly going up against The Vaudevillains.

The concept didn't catch on until 1937 however, when promoter Morris Sigel put on what was called a 'Texas Tornado' match. Milo Steinborn and the frankly incredibly named Whiskers Savage teamed up to take on Tiger Daula and Fazul Mohammed.

Whiskers Savage really needs to make a comeback.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
