20 Signs You Watch Too Much WWE

9. You Have Trouble Spelling China, Rhino, And Venus (And Pronouncing Fandango)

Like any multi-million dollar company, WWE is very protective of its trademarks - not only does their legal team refuse to let wrestlers compete for other major companies under names created by WWE, but (with a few notable exceptions) they insist on coming up with original names for talent, which they can then trademark. There's nothing wrong (or, at least, unusual) about that, but the practice does have some humorous (or frustrating) results. Words and ideas that are common or not the intellectual property of WWE can't be trademarked by the company - that includes the country of China, the planet Venus, or the animal "rhino." In order to get legal ownership, WWE creative has to make the spellings (or pronunciations, in the case of Fandango) original - hence the wrestlers Chyna, Rhyno, and Val Venis. Again, no problem, but when you spend more time reading and writing about wrestling than you do about geopolitics, zoology, or astronomy, those words tend to look wrong - even when they're spelled right. Thanks, WWE, for your hard work in undoing our educations.
