20 Things You Learn Watching WWE Since 1997
16. Tag Team Wrestling Is Not A Priority
One thing about WWE that's been consistent for more than two decades is that it always represents Vince McMahon's vision of wrestling - just one man whose opinions are then broadcast out to millions of people every week. Part of said vision is that Vince McMahon doesn't really like tag team wrestling.
It's not that tag team matches bore him, per se (although maybe they do, nobody really knows), just that he thinks tag teams can't be as popular and lucrative as individual stars. As such, he's not invested in long-term plans for teams, or the division on the whole.
It's not hard to see that in practice. While there have been exceptions - consider the recent WWE Tag Team Title run for The New Day, or the TLC feud of 2000-2001 - for the most part, the division is shallow and underemphasized. Since The New Day lost the titles, the Raw belts have become worthless once again, and on Smackdown, American Alpha haven't gotten the same measure of care they did in NXT.
Don't expect this to change while Vince is in charge.
