James was actually The Honky Tonk Man's first choice of protégé, but James emphatically answered "no" to the offer by busting HTM's own guitar over his head, thus leading to the feud between "The Real Double J" and "Rockabilly." Noticing that their careers as singles competitors were stagnating, James eventually took on the name of "The Road Dogg" and proposed an alliance with Gunn, forming The New Age Outlaws.
