20 WWE And UFC Controversies Created By Brock Lesnar

18. Not A Fan Of UFC Referee

Lesnar was actually winning his first bout in the UFC - against Frank Mir - until referee Stee Mazzagatti penalised him for strikes to the back of the head. Now, let's be clear: Lesnar did land some strikes to the back of the head. However, refs often give a warning, or multiple warnings, for such an infraction. They generally aren't intentional, especially when your opponent is moving his head frequently and often extremely suddenly. Still, it's a foul, and Mazzagatti took a point, something he had the power to do. It also interrupted the fight, allowed Mir to recover, and possibly cost Lesnar the win. So, when Lesnar was set to face Randy Couture for the UFC title, he very publicly stated he wanted Mazzagatti nowhere near it. Fighters don't normally get to choose, and a fighter speaking out against a ref that way would generally be frowned upon - but in this case, Lesnar might have got a bit of a pass. While it was controversial, it wasn't much more so than the strikes themselves in that first Mir fight, and nearly everyone points to Mazzagatti as one of the worst refs in the business.
